TOILET TANGO

Pieza site-specific

français

english

THE GUARDIAN, Judith Mackrell

ROOF a live movie

Site-specific piece

español

A panoramic view of a city is always referring to this infinite net of stories happening at the same time.
Hidden behind walls and windows we can imagine the present life of a community, while the past is written in their façades and the future prefigured in the concreteness of the constructions that will remain much after we are gone.
Aiming to create a third space in between theatricality and reality, ROOF brings the audience to a building terrace and place the actors/dancers scattered in the landscape. Helped by the sound coming from wireless headphones and binoculars, the public is invited to follow a “live movie”: an original script made to fit in this specific location with elements of dance, live re-takes of classic films, and documentary material previously gathered in the neighborhood. The performance become in this way not only what the dancers/actors are doing, but also the resonance of their actions against a background that reaches the horizon line and involves in its trajectory many layers of association possibilities. Due to the shift of perception provoked by the piece the city is suddenly transformed into a gigantic décor in which the categorization of real and fiction needs to be given by the spectator.

“(…)Roof a live movie/Napoli is not lacking of suggestion, in fact they come like a torrent in this precious and romantic performance placed in an absolutely innovative location. As Totò directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini said, "we are a dream inside the dream", and if it went really like this last night on the roofs of the Academy, then be sure that there is no better dream to have.”
Campagnia su web, Carla Bagnulo
“Innovative and experimental the contribution offered on this occasion by Rodrigo Pardo to the audience of the Teatro Festival Italia. The kind of beautiful and risky ideas that contemporary theater needs to look towards the future.”
Teatro.Org, Alessia Coppola
“The Accademia di Belle Arti welcomes the audience on the roofs for "Roof a live movie / Napoli" by Rodrigo Pardo, beautiful visions scattered all around, headphones recalling sounds and words and the binoculars allowing indiscreet glances. The fast game that you would like never ends close with a smile a Festival’s day.”

ROOF a live movie

Obra site-specific

english

TOILET TANGO

Site-specific piece

français

español

Declared world's cultural heritage by the Unesco, TANGO not only represents the Argentinean culture but the universal icon of glamour and sophisticated seduction. From Rudolph Valentino till today we cannot separate its image from the panoply of heels, splits, and roses clasped between gritted teeth commonly associated with itTANGO was never meant to fit, spatially and mentally, in a TOILET room, as an urinal was never meant to be an art object before it was placed in a gallery.
As a kind of inverted Duchamp's "ready made" effect Rodrigo Pardo brings the extraordinary into the ordinary creating an humorous and thought-provoking event of contrasted images.
Usually performed in a shop’s window, it is physically placed in the border of the public and the private , a theater space gained from daily life that helps to reinforce the voyeuristic sensation given by the intimacy exposed.

“(..)..as a charmingly imaginative little reminder of dance’s ability to transform any space – a bathroom, a footpath, you name it – into something very special indeed, it’s splendid, and goes down like a hot little mocha on a cold autumn day. “
TELGRAPH UK , Mark Monahan
“Toilet Tango is a gem of street theatre. Wittily imagined, impeccably performed and just 10 minutes long, it not only draws the crowds, it keeps them.”
THE GUARDIAN, Judith Mackrell
“10 fulminating minutes, with great beauty, poetry and melancholy. Such a simple and perfect thing is close to geniality.”

LiveMovie

Site-specific creation and teaching project

In his book The Ignorant Schoolmaster French philosopher Jacques Rancière explores the benefits of keeping alive a space of uncertainty at the base of any learning process, describing humans as distant animals who communicate through the forest of signs, going from what they know to what they don’t yet know in a constant comparison and association work. In a later essay, The Emancipated Spectator, he applies the same concept to the artistic world, equaling the gap of meaning in between the spectator and the performance to this forest of signs none of them is the owner.
“It is this third thing nobody is the owner, none of them has the meaning, which stands between them, excluding any identical transmission, any identity of cause and effect.»
Being this “third thing” something not staying still but in movement, is in the back and forward of the communication that performances arise in what theoretician Erika Fischer-Lichte defines as “autopoietic feedback loop”: a constant exchange and regulation of the relationship of two groups of people. Performances in this sense cannot transmit given meanings by themselves Fischer-Lichte says; instead, they bring forth the meanings that come into being over their course.
Site-specific performances in which fiction (or artistic construction) dialogues with real environments are especially propitious for opening the kind of vacuum of meaning needed to be filled by the spectator. Here the gap is not only given by the relation audience-performance but also in the dialogue performance-space and is the audience again who actively put together all this information creating a narrative which also includes their own images triggered by the piece.LiveMovie is a creation format for site-specific work developed by Rodrigo Pardo that focuses especially on the analysis of this type of relationship between viewers, performance and space. The project includes a work methodology that since 2007 Rodrigo has implemented in creations for institutions such as La Biennale di Venezia, In-situ European Network, Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires or Napoli Teatro Festival, and it is also a workshop format that seeks to share these creative tools with other artists. In 2021/22 LiveMovie project has got a national grant by NPN Germany for its further developmentThe workshop has been presesented in the following festivals and artistic institutions:
September 2023- Galway/Ireland ( University of Galway and Bru Theater)

"In an unknown city, in an apartment like any other, an anonymous man loses his ground. Literally upside down, the control over his senses abandons him, as well as its attachment to reality.
This character, halfway between a metamorphosed Kafka and a restless J.L.Borges, is also a room traveler, wandering through the labyrinths if his own conscience, errant inside his mental landscapes"
FLAT combines storytelling, video projections and aerial performance. It could be presented on the back wall of a theatre stage or outdoors, four stories up, on the side of an apartment building. The inner voice text can be translated and recorded in the local language.

"This is one dance that could be seen again and again, as its mystery was more potent than its meaning "
Wendy Liberatore / The Daily Gazzete, Sch.NYork-US

In Flat, Argentinian choreographer and theatre maker Rodrigo Pardo plays with abstract notions of time, space and perspective, all of them qualities that can no longer be taken for granted here – in a literal sense due to the tilted performance area hung at a dizzying height, and in a figurative sense.

Dance Film

This dance-video was filmed in the own choreographer’s flat. It tells how the dance piece Cuadrado Negro Sobre Fondo Negro was made (created in the living room of the same apartment and put into scene after that) and simultaneously presents the real situations that motivated the piece before mentioned. Filmed with a single camera and with a very low production budget, 2 AMBIENTES is a testimony of the artists’ universe, including Argentinean tango, suprematist painting and even a fight scene in the Batman&Robin style. If all places are filled with the events that have taken place there, how many stories would fit into a 30m² flat?“Dos Ambientes" (Argentina, 2004) Beginning with a spectacular fantasy tango inside a tiny bathroom, Rodrigo Pardo's 15-minute dance drama also features a brutal fight-dance in a narrow kitchen and intense split-screen love duets -- all using spatial confinement to enhance the dance experience.
Funny, sexy and endlessly resourceful, the choreography conjures dancing out of alternately mundane and grim reality with great freshness.”

CUADRADO NEGRO SOBRE FODO NEGRO

Dance Duo

Framed within an essentially physical dramaturgy, Cuadrado Negro Sobre Fondo Negro stages the problems of a couple in an indefinite time and space where the use of paper tape that limits the perimeter sets the conflict in a house, a bed, a stage or the very interior of a suprematist painting.-When the world becomes unattainably vast we can only invent our own, tailor-making one for ourselves“. .the work of Rodrigo Pardo, (Cuadrado Negro Sobre Fondo Negro), full, solid and beautiful in resolutions and intentions, revealed his talent to transform what occurs in the setting into a different universe from real life”.
Laura Falcoff / Diario Clarin
“(....)Rodrigo Pardo uses different procedures from contemporary dance as well as drama-dance, without resorting to a particular language. He develops a very personal style in order to create the restlessness and loneliness of this clearly in-crisis couple.
Beyond the movement, and the spatial configuration, in the piece Cuadrado Negro Sobre Fondo Negro, Pardo plays with texts projected on the wall, low lights, and contrasting costume to complete an extremely expressive show. The dancer uses his voice and knowledge of tango to give the performance a very “porteño” style, that matches perfectly well with a dance of impressive physical strength.

FRAMING SOUL

Dance Video

Live performances don’t last so long in the physical world, they remain as sensations. Films stay for a longer period, but as any object, they get older while sensations are always renewed. 'Framing Soul' is a video documentation about dance improvisation (Soul Project, by David Zambrano) and at the same time is an ephemeral object, the act of filming itself as a performance that will never be repeated.

OGNAT

Dance Piece

français

As if we would be in tango house for tourists in Buenos Aires, “Ognat” starts with a couple dancing a tango in its characteristic passionate and virtuoso style. But what happen after the spectacular ending and the clamorous applause is a progressive decoding of all the glamorous clichés associated with this dance.“Ognat”, in this way, plays with the expectations around the word “Tango” and the predefined images included already in the mind of the spectators before they come to the theatre.
The dancers embodies these images and at the same time abandon them, creating a gap, a space in which is possible to redefine again what they are watching.
Focusing on this active side of the audience, the piece shift from tango to contemporary dance, mixing live performance with prerecorded video, taking the time to transmit the subtleness of a sensual touch, the tenderness of a warm embrace or the violence of a punch right in the nose.“..Ognat didn’t show “the sad thought to be danced”, but the capacity of the dance, of any dance to make of itself a vehicle of emotions and concepts. Of contrasts. Off sweet and bitter sensual games. ..Pardo and his company succeeded, by performing a very complex piece, in what they wanted to show”Il Gazzetino, Paola Burna, Venice

OGNAT

Pièce de Danse

english

Of contrasts. Off sweet and bitter sensual games. ..Pardo and his company succeeded, by performing a very complex piece, in what they wanted to show”Il Gazzetino, Paola Burna, Venice/IT

Musical projects

Since always interested in music as a way of expression it is in 2016 that Rodrigo starts his own personal quest . This personal path is rooted in tango and Argentinean folklore but always open to external influences as a result of his nomadic life based in different countries along the last 15 years.
Being an autodidact in what music refers, he had associated with professional musicians such as Diego Trosman, Gerardo Agnese, Simon Thierree and Manuel Cedron to create duos, trios and quartet formations in which he is in charge of song writing and singing.

Dos Ambientes-live

Site-specific piece

Based on the multi awarded dance-video DOS AMBIENTES , Rodrigo Pardo adapted his creation originally made for fitting in his own appartment in Buenos Aires to a house in Naples/IT, resulting on a site-specific piece in which audience follows the characters from room to room witnessing at the same time the creative process and the piece itself that develops in front of them

" Like ghosts born out of their imagination, we follow Pardo and Wanka into the bathroom, kitchen and living room, where they demonstrate that in dance the main thing is the fun of feeling each other. The passion, the elegance, the sinuosity, the precision of the interpreters are the alchemy of two spirits caught in the embrace of shared desires."Matteo Brighenti / paneacquaculture.net- 8-8-2019

HISTORIA

english

HISTORY

español

Choreographer, performer and video maker, Rodrigo Pardo-Tascón was born in 1971 (Argentina). At the age of four he made his first contact with the art of representation by running away from his mother’s hand, straight down the corridor of a crowded theater-cinema, crossing the stage and crashing his face against the large screen. Then he faced two revelations: Bugs Bunny was not real and it felt great to be on the stage (even in front of an angry audience). At 15 years old a second event will push him definitely into the art world, this time is the Danish group Odin Teatret presenting pieces in public spaces of Bahia Blanca which makes Pardo arrive to a third revelation: The city is not real.
The sudden change of meaning of all the elements used by the performers (monuments, statues, public buildings) made him realize the power of art to reshape reality, an instrument that creates parallel worlds proposing a dialogue with the unknown.
In the following five years he will graduate as an actor from Escuela de Teatro de Bahía Blanca, collaborate with independent projects and work as a street performer in Argentina and Europe.
In his pursuit of a more physical theatricality he will move to Buenos Aires in 1993 to study at Taller de Danza Contemporánea del TGSM. Pardo will graduate three years later as contemporary dancer and will start working with some of the most representative choreographers of his country: Oscar Aráiz, Ana María Stekelman and Gustavo Lesgart, among others.
In 1997 he will relocate to New York to continue his dance studies at Movement Research and Dancespace Project, but after few months the initial plan will change completely when he meets Armando Orzuza and Daniela Arcuri, an astonish tango couple who will guide him into the traditional Argentinean dance. Together with his dance partner Gabriela Lavagnino they will quickly became relevant figures of the Manhattan tango scene.
From there on tango dance will be present in his work adopting different forms, first in its most traditional way and later as a recurrent fascinating element that combines physical and relational complexity in one form.
With the clear need of producing his own work he will be back in Argentina one year later to create Cuadrado Negro Sobre Fondo Negro, a dance duo with Victoria Ansiaume and Marina Brusco, inspired by the Russian painter Kasimir Malevich. In the piece a couple is designing squares on the floor as representational spaces for daily life, the perfect geometry contrast with a millimetered yet violent choreography that evolves showing different layers of a relationship.
The main action will happen in a square of 2 by 2 meters, in fact, the maximal usable space available in Pardo’s apartment, which due to budget reasons has become the rehearsal studio.
For several years he will keep collaborating with other companies, teaching tango and contemporary dance, and producing his work supported by foundations like Antorchas, Prodanza, Fondo Nacional de las Artes and Centro Experimental del Teatro Colón.
In 2004, with the help of a scholarship offered by Fundación Antorchas, he will move for one year to Brussels to investigate the inspiring Belgian dance movement, but just before leaving Buenos Aires he will again gather dancers in his small apartment and produce with Guiye Fernández the future award wining Dos Ambientes, a dance film made with almost no budget that will tour extensively the world and open many new doors. Dos Ambientes will reach the Venice Biennale and give place to a new offer: two commissioned live performances based on the film to be presented at 5th. Festivale Int. di Danza Contemporánea. The re-take results in Ognat , a trio with Cristina Cortés, Sebastián Scandrolgio and himself, and Tango Toilet, a duo with Cortés in which his Buenos Aires flat’s toilet room is reproduced in a sanitary-wares shop in the historic center of Venice and performed for the audience in the street.
The year 2006 will find him in Amsterdam participating in Dasarts (Postgraduate Studies in Performing Arts). There, the happy encounter with visual artist Shirin Neshat will encourage him to investigate more in depth the relation of movement, space and camera. Result of it is the experimental short video Una Toma and Framing Soul, a documentary film about the work of renowned dance-maker David Zambrano.Being by chance on the 8th floor terrace of Amsterdam’s Theater School, Pardo will find inspiration for his Dasarts graduation piece: ROOF
The wide open perspective of the city connects him immediately with this initial sensation he experienced when, back in Bahía Blanca, he saw how the familiar landscape of his hometown changed in front of his eyes due to the action of the performers.
As a synthesis of all the elements Pardo was using till this moment, the piece is defined as a live movie in which the audience, placed on the 8th floor terrace and helped by binoculars and wireless headphones, follows the live action performed in the windows and roofs of the buildings across the street. Like a movie cut in different pieces and spread out in the city, the structure of the performance is based on separate scenes that the audience has to put together. In June 2009 a second version called ROOF a live movie / Napoli is presented and produced by Napoli Teatro Festival ItaliaIn between 2010 and 2013 he develops his next project called FLAT . It is produced mainly by EMPAC (US), IN-SITU Network and Lieux Publics (FR). Using elements of aerial dance and video mapping , the piece tells the story of a character (Yves Fauchon) who is inhabiting an apartment tilted 90 degrees.
FLAT continues currently on tour after being presented in some of the most representative contemporary street festivals as Chalon dans la Rue, TAC, Les Tombées de la Nuit, and many others.
While all the work mentioned above continues, Rodrigo Pardo begins in 2016 developing his own musical quest that includes elements of tango and Argentinean folklore. In collaboration with musicians such as Diego Trosman, Gerardo Agnese, Simon Thierree and Manuel Cedron, he attempts to evoke a personal identity that feeds equally from its roots and the new environmentIn 2018, the encounter with the dancer and choreographer Rosalie Wanka produced new physical oriented works such as Tormentango, a duo that fuses tango and contemporary dance filmed in the salt flats of northern Argentina, Dos Ambientes / Live, site-specific version of his multi-award-winning dance-video recreated inside an apartment in the city of Napoli for the Altofest Festival 2019, and Asymmetrical Eoncouters , developed during 2020/21 with the support of Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt-München.Together with a group of international artists he is selected in 2019 to participate in MakeAmove, a Creative Europe project for the research on innovative forms of production in the field of independent theater. It is during these meetings that Pardo initiates LiveMovie, a proposal for the development of site-specific composition tools that is currently both a workshop format, such as the one taught during the Transit Festival-Rijeka 2021, and a creation format that will be the base for the development of "5 poses to face the storm", a piece expected to be premiered in 2022, supported by the National Performance Network - Stepping Out / GermanyRodrigo Pardo-Tascón is currently based in MarseilleContact:
